As we face increasing problems around the World with "Super-bugs" such as MRSA (Golden Staph), VRE and c-diff (both nasty "tummy" bugs that cause huge problems in hospitals, scientists around the Globe are looking at remedies that were used "pre-Penicillin"
The Western World adopted the new "Wonder Drug" and Russia and its conquered States went on developing Bacteriophages, viruses that kill bacteria. These are called Phages and the use “Phage Therapy” Bacteriophage is Bacteria Killer, as Phage is Greek for Killer, and we have Macrophages as part of our immune system and Phagocytes (white blood cells), which help kill “invaders”
While the Western Allies developed antibiotics to save wounded soldiers, Russia kept out of the loop did the same thing with Phage Therapy. Antibiotics suffer from increasing resistance, Phages develop to counter this.
As more of our Antibiotics fail, the Western World is increasing looking to the possibility of Phage Therapy being used again (it was from 1920 to early 1940's). In the USA the FDA has approved Phages being used in prepared foods to prevent Listeria, Salmonella and e-coli infections and the US Army has asked for research on MRSA and Shigella.
Australia is one of the Countries looking at this exciting area, and one day our servicemen wounded in combat may be treated with Phage Bandages (NATO is looking at this) to prevent deadly infections developing while the wounded person is rushed to hospital.
